Introduction:
Much of our success as a manager or supervisor will depend on the quality of the people whose work you are responsible. It is true that most of us inherit a ready-made team when we first take on a managerial role, sooner or later vacancies arise and you get the chance to appoint people of your own choosing. Besides which, you can expect to influence the morale and productivity of your team by the way you set about understanding their strengths and weaknesses, developing their competences, improving people’s jobs, counseling them, appraising their work, encouraging their efforts, ensuring equal opportunities and where necessary applying disciplinary procedures.
